WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a state of focused inner awareness and reduced peripheral awareness. It is not visualization, or mediation, but is unique in its ability to help a person change. It is a non-invasive, completely safe, quick, effective, and efficient method to help you to help yourself, where you are always in control.
Common Terms used in Hypnosis:
Induction- A process by which the client, guided by the hypnotist, is invited into a relaxed physical and mental state of awareness.
Using self-help techniques enables the client to use their natural ability to change the way that they think, feel or behave. Because hypnosis empowers the client, real lasting results can be seen in a very short period of time.
Trance- A focused and relaxed state of awareness within which a client works on their specific goals. The trance state is a very natural and easily achieved process; it is not a deep sleep or a state of unconsciousness.
For example:
daydreaming or when we are totally engaged watching our favorite television program or engrossed in a book is a form/or level of trance. Because a client subconsciously remains aware of their surroundings while in this state they can choose to come out of hypnosis at any time.
Brief History about Hypnosis:
"Some of the earliest evidence of hypnosis for healing comes from the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, dating to 1550 B.C. Another Egyptian papyrus (Pap. A. Nr. 65) describes the laying of hands on the patient, hand passes, and eye-fixation" (Mongiovi, 2014 ).
"In India, yogis and rishis utilized self-hypnosis during meditation to still their minds. In India, the word hypnosis is referred to as sammohan. Sammohan has been practiced in India since the Vedic times, 1500-500 B.C. And also, in 2,000 B.C".
“Hypnotherapy has been widely used in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. Hypnosis techniques were merged with psychiatry and are especially useful in the treatment Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
In the 1950s medicine started to use hypnosis for therapy. In 1955 British Medical Association recognized hypnosis therapy and in 1958 the American Medical Association approved a report on the medical use of hypnosis. 2 years after AMA approval, the American Psychological Association endorsed hypnosis as a branch of psychology.
Today, hypnosis is a highly effective and popular medical tool and it is widely used for habit control – stop smoking, weight control, stress reduction, and other health problems” (Ibadov, 2008)
Hypnosis has survived through time and is still around today because it works.
